Skitouring and freeriding above the arctic circle
Freeriding and skitouring above the arctic circle (Norway/Sweden) Western Europe's last real wilderness!
Imagine the roughest part of the Alps combined with the sea that comes halfway into the valleys and sunlight until midnight. That is called ski(tour)ing in the Norwegian fjords! When the ski season is over in the Alps, it does not mean that our ski season is finished. On the contrary! More and more ski freaks from the Alps go up north where the days are long and nature is at its best.
Adventurous ski-expedition in the north of Europe
Western Europe's last real wilderness
When the ski season is over in the Alps, it does not mean that our ski season is finished. On the contrary! For more than 15 years we have organised ski trips to the north of Europe where the days are long and nature is at its best. Off-piste skiing in the midnight sun in Swedish Lapland and in the Norwegian fjords is an unforgettable experience and guarantees a very special atmosphere.
The geographical location of this mountain range on the line Kiruna / Narvik at the Swedish-Norwegian border, 200 km above the arctic circle, combined with the influence of the warm Gulf Stream provides for a winter climate with a lot of snow. From April / May, the sun shines day and night on the skislopes. And the huge advantage of this range compared to the Alps is that there are no acclimatization issues because the slopes are between 0 and 2000 meters! This means more energy for touring and skiing and yet long, long descents!
Programme (subject to change, it is possible that we go the other way round, depending on the flight schemes of SAS and Norwegian airlines):
After arrival in Kiruna, Swedish Lapland, our van will take us to the Abisko Mountains. We will be staying in a pleasant and comfortable lodge with sauna and hottub. Do expect an excellent and typical Scandinavian breakfast and a great evening meal. As for skiing, we can choose between the ski areas of Nuolja, Riksgränsen and Björkliden. Skitouring is another possibility. Directly from the lodge, heliskiing is possible near the Kebnekaise (2111m), Swedens highest mountain. With a little luck we will be dropped at the end of the day at a beautiful mountain hut, the highest hut in Sweden with the inevitable sauna and a very good kitchen. When the weather is bad, we will use climbing skins to reach the hut.
We then go to Norway, Narvik to be precise, to the ski area that rises high above the ocean. Lifts are usually open here from 11hrs – 20hrs, freeriding is good and great tours can be made from the lift area.
Our next goal lies even further north: near Tromsø are the Lyngen Alps where we can make fantastic tours. Other options are a fishing night and a boat tour in a fjord where we might see dolphins and whales. The programme will be adapted to the swiftly changing weather- and snowconditions, so some flexibility is necessary. You can expect all sorts of snow, from wet mushy snow to fantastic firn or even loose powder snow. The programme is strenuous and meant for good off-piste and tour skiers.
Tip: go to 'booking' and watch the Youtube compilation of several tours to Scandinavia, made by Edward and Ilse Bekker. It gives you a good impression of this great trip.
